Mrs. Bucklew’s friends
will soon become authors and illustrators of their own books during Writer’s
Workshop instruction. Students have been
studying work from well-known authors, who are also illustrators. They have looked at books by David Shannon,
Mo Willems, Eric Carle, Leo Lionni, and Donald Crews. During their picture walks through books,
students have been encouraged to look at how the authors tell their stories not
only through words, but also through their pictures; including speech bubbles,
labels, and details. Students have also
been encouraged to take note on how these authors can be recognized by their
style of illustrations in their books. The students wrapped up their study of
authors by choosing their favorite picture from one of the authors and presenting
it to the
class – pointing out the details of the picture and why they liked
it.
