Thankful...

Thankful (as found online at m-w.com) - :  glad that something has happened or did not happen, that something or someone exists, etc.  :  of, relating to, or expressing thanks

This year, without a doubt, I can say I am truly thankful for each of my students.  They make me laugh every day.  They challenge me to be a better teacher.  They are all VERY special.  Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your family this school year.  I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Then and Now

Mrs. Bucklew’s class used the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday as a stepping stone to discuss the cultural differences between children now and children of the colonies.  The students learned the facts about the Pilgrims and Indians and how the First Thanksgiving Feast occurred.  Students brainstormed what they would have wanted to take on the Mayflower, how their list might differ from the Pilgrim children, noticed the differences in clothing from then to now, and discussed the types of games/activities the children would have played.  Just in time for Thanksgiving, the students had a chance to experience some of these discussions.  Each student helped Mrs. Bucklew make fresh butter – it was a lot harder than going to the store!  Then, students created their own paintings using homemade paintbrushes from corn husks and paint from the juice of beets.  “This is hard,” and “yuck…it smells” were comments made by many.  Although the paintings may never be hung as masterpieces in an art gallery, the experience was priceless!
